A Quick History of the Native Pony Saddle Company

In the late 90’s Dean Woodward was fitting second hand saddles he picked up from tack shops, customers and auctions. Unfortunately he found that very few actually fitted to his satisfaction.

In early 2000 Hayley Hyde Andrews asked her saddle maker who had his own brand “the Pony Saddle Company” if he minded if she market a brand called “The Native Pony Saddle Company” . he agreed to this and The Native Pony Saddle Company was born with Hayley selling saddles based on her saddle makers designs mainly mail order.

Meanwhile Dean had designed his own saddle, a specific way to fit them and approached makers in Walsall to make them for him a number of makers tried but Dean was not completely happy with any of them. Around this time Hayley approached him and asked if he wanted to buy the Native Pony name and that is how he finally met Steve,Her saddle maker.

Over the next few years with the help of Steve the saddle maker who still works with us today, Dean refined the designs based on his experience fitting the saddles all over the country and the input of his customers.

“The Native Pony Saddle Company ” brand went from strength to strength as nothing seemed to fit as well, Due to their innovative trees, wide gullets and generous load bearing panels with shorter gussets, flocked in a unique way they do not roll, they do not move up the neck and the ponies and cobs love them.

To help to explain the current confusion with regards to The Native Pony Saddle Company Brand and to address certain malicious claims made on a number of forums, Facebook etc . We would like to explain that after a split in the business in 2010 Native Pony Saddle Company Branded Saddles are now available from two sources, Native Pony and Cob Saddles Ltd and our selves .

We still provide the Original Native Pony Saddle Company Branded products. All our designs are true to tradition, enhancements being made with the introduction of The Pony Saddle Company range, the trademark is in fact owned by Saddle Exchange Ltd, a company that evolved from Dean Woodward T/A Saddle Exchange and jointly owned by Dean Woodward & Andrea Hicks, his previous partner. The trademark was transferred for a time to Native Pony & Cob saddles Ltd, owned by Andrea Hicks. But that has now been rectified to the correct owner by an Interlectual Property Office Hearing.

All our Native Pony Saddle Company Saddles Look The Same, Fit The Same, Feel The Same, Are Made to The Same High Standard By Our Original Manufacturers .
